Every industry needs equipment that is reliable. A dependable pipe system gives you peace of mind that your system is flowing smoothly. Expansion joints are a vital component in any pipe system. Installing your custom bellows is the first step in ensuring you have a pipe system that operates effectively.
Custom bellows need special handling and instruction due to their flexible material. Learn how to install your custom metal bellows with these steps.
Installation Preparation
With the correct installation, your new bellow will last for years. When preparing the bellow for installation, there are a few things to consider:
- Be sure that the new bellow does not exceed the installation tolerances. Correct any piping misalignment.
- Remove the protection that covers the ends of the expansion joint.
- Inspect the inside of the bellow for any foreign objects.
- If there is a flow liner, be sure to position the metal bellow with the flow arrow pointing in the correct direction.
Installing Your Custom Bellows
An essential step in knowing how to install your custom metal bellows is not to overstress the joint. The pipe and bellow should be a smooth fit—do not stretch the joint to fit the piping system. Some elements to keep in mind when installing your custom metal bellows include:
- Cover the bellows in a fire-retardant blanket before welding or grinding to protect the joint from weld spatter.
- Always align the bellow bolt holes with the mating flange—never twist the joint! Doing so could result in the bellow failing.
- Until your custom bellow is fully installed, one flange needs to be loose to allow for adjustments.
- Remember to remove the shipping bars from the expansion joint before conducting any pressure testing.
- After you’ve installed the joint, immediately check the bellow for unusual vibrations. Any abnormal movement can shorten the lifespan of the expansion joint.
- Always conduct regular inspections of custom bellows and piping systems.
Custom metal bellows should always be installed following proper guidelines to ensure the longevity of your expansion joint. Contact us at Triad Bellows with any questions!
