As an integral part of piping systems, expansion joints absorb thermal expansion in the piping, absorb excessive vibrations and correct misalignment concerns to ensure all systems work correctly. With additional applications in car exhaust systems and HVAC units, you can find these parts in both rubber and metal.
Despite their similar functions, some differences place metal expansion joints at an advantage when using them for projects.
Continue reading below to learn why metal expansion joints are better than rubber.
The Difference
Metal expansion joints are flexible elements of thin gauge material. Typically made with stainless steel, this type of equipment can absorb thermal and mechanical movements while in service.
On the other hand, a rubber joint’s build consists of synthetic elastomers that help relieve piping systems during mechanical vibration and thermal movements.
Pressure Capabilities
Relative pressure capabilities will vary depending on the size of the expansion joint and application. In general, rubber expansion joints can relieve the necessary amount of pressure while also maintaining flexibility. However, these devices are not capable of withstanding excessive amounts of stress.
While metal is a stiffer material than rubber, metal expansion joints can withstand more pressure of combined forces, allowing devices to handle heavier loads. In general, rubber joints can handle upwards of 250 psi, and metal joints can handle a pressure upwards of 1000 psi.
Temperature Capabilities
Metal expansion bellows can withstand much more in the temperature spectrum from -420°F to +1500°F. Conversely, rubber joints have a threshold of withstanding temperatures up from 230°F to 400°F.
In some fields, piping system temperatures will exceed pressure and temperatures suited for rubber joints.
Metal expansion joints are better than rubber because they can withstand extreme temperatures and absorb more pressure than the alternative. Knowing the difference between them can help you avoid making mistakes during a repair where metal would be best.
